Back-to-School Safety Checklist
Physical Security Means Staying Safe
Are you ready for back-to-school season? Make sure that part of preparing for the coming school year is to teach children basic back-to-school safety tips. Whether your kids ride the bus or walk to class, use tips offered by industry experts, like a Santa Clara security patrol company, to reinforce and remind children and parents of the hazards outside the home.
Our San Jose security company suggests the following safety tips during back-to-school season:
1. Establish a Route
Before the school year starts, establish a route to your child’s school and practice it. Besides providing a way of navigating the course to school, this will help to increase your child’s self-esteem and confidence at the same time.
2. Remind Your Kids “Stranger Danger”
Remind your kids often of stranger danger; tell them to avoid speaking to strangers when you are not present. Also, reinforce the hazards of getting in a strange car, offering to help a stranger, or going any place with someone that they do not know.
3. Implement a Buddy-System
Set up a buddy-system, whereas your child walks to and from school with a peer or friend that attends the same school. This is a great step-down from parental supervision and lets the child feel more independent. A buddy-system is a great way to ensure that your child–and their buddy–are never alone or vulnerable during this commute.
4. Teach Street Smarts
Teach children to be street smart, that is, to know the street signs, traffic lights, and other elements to help keep them safe during walks. These are things that they will need to learn anyway, so start early to protect them during walks along any roads or byways. There are many age appropriate books and websites that teach and quiz traffic signs and signals for children.
5. Reinforce School Bus Safety
Teach school bus safety strategies to your child if they ride it to school. Remind them to never, ever stop in front of a bus during crossing as the driver may not be able to see them. Also, instruct them to always remain seated and still during rides. It is simply the safest way to ride the bus.
6. Quiz Your Child
Make sure that your child knows their parents’ full names, phone numbers, and address. This is invaluable information in the event that they become lost or miss their bus stop at the end of the school day.
